A Clinical Trial of Trimebutine Maleate in the Irritable Bowel Syndrome


Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to assess the clinical effectiueness of trimebutine maleate(poly¡þbutinep) in Korean patients with the irritable bowel syndrome.
One tablet (100mg) of trimebutine maleate was given orally before each meal 3 times a day for 3 weeks to 42 patients who were diagnosed as the irritable bowel syndrome at the out-patient clinic of the Seoul National University Hospital. The effectiveness was assessed by the
subjective decision in 3 different arbitrary levels; excellent, good and not effective, and the cases with excellent or good response to the drug were stoned as effective.
Out of the 17 patients with the spastic constipation type of the irritable colon syndrome, 13 (76. 5%) were improved and out of the 16 patients with the painless dierrlee type, 14 (87. 5%) were improved. Out of the 7 patients with alternating diarrlea and constipation 6 (85. 7%) were improved.
The overall efficacy rate of trimebutine in this trial was 81. 0%. There was not a single case in this series, who presented any untoward side effect related to the drug.
